Milk Bar’s Birthday Layer Cake

Milk Bar’s Birthday Layer Cake

First thing’s first: I love Milk Bar and Christina Tosi. The last time I went to New York City, I was there for three days and went to Milk Bar five times. I own the Momofuku Milk Bar cookbook, spazzed out when Christina joined MasterChef, and went to the Twist pop-up in town.

My boyfriend’s birthday was last week, and I decided to finally redeem myself from the first time I attempted to make this cake (it sucked) and try to make my favorite birthday cake for a second time. BOYYYYYYYYYY, I think I came pretty close. (Keep reading to see how I made it!)

August monthly spread

August monthly spread

Throughout grade school, I loved using an agenda. I lived for using colored pins to color code my classes and moving that flimsy plastic bookmark ruler between pages every week. In college, I used Moleskines and loved my highlighting system to keep track of exams, club events, and personal life. My agenda was my baby, and when I graduated, I relied — miraculously enough — on my memory until there were too many things happening to keep track of.

Lush & Jeffrey Campbell haul

Lush & Jeffrey Campbell haul

I love Lush and was in the market for facial cleanser. Recently I’ve been using Neutrogena’s oil-free acne wash in pink grapefruit foaming scrub. I’ve had the value-size bottle for years and have been trying to use it up. I’ve always known that micro beads were bad, but I assumed it was just bad to use on your skin. It wasn’t until the other night that I learned it was also bad for the environment after seeing this video while I was on a Lush YouTube hole. So I’ve been debating on whether I should toss out the remainder of my acne wash and waste product to be more environmentally cautious and help protect the environment. On one hand, I’m using up product I already have while dumping more micro plastic beads into the ocean; but on the other, I’m wasting product and money already spent.

I decided to pull the trigger and stop by my local Lush store to find my new favorite facial cleanser. After having a mini pow-wow with one of the Lush consultants, I decided on Angels on Bare Skin and took a sample of Movis. I already have a lavender theme going on with my skincare routine — I use Lush’s Imperialis and Eau Roma Water — so Angels on Bare Skin made sense since it contains lavender.

I also treated myself and picked up Lullaby to hopefully combat the dandruff I’ve been having and Happy Happy Joy Joy because frankly I got suckered into the smell and was about to need some new conditioner soon.

As a “hello! hi! we’re nice and super friendly” gesture, my Lush lady also gave me a generous sample of Mask of Magnaminty since yes, I was about to buy a lot, but also because we got into a conversation about face masks and bonded over how satisfying it was to have a face tingle and smell like chocolate mint chip.

I’m taking my boyfriend to Lush for his birthday next week, and just FYI I might have to pick up Sleepy because I sampled it and fell in love with the oats and lavender (yes, I’m a sucker) but couldn’t bring myself to buy it this go-around.

But can we talk about my new shoes now?

Lemon blueberry muffins

Lemon blueberry muffins

I make more than muffins I swear, but I’ve been on a muffin kick lately so sorry not sorry. After baking those banana bread chocolate chips muffins, I was craving blueberry muffins  — my fav btw. I was in the mood for something quick and easy that didn’t demand I sift flour or make a crumble topping.  I also had a lemon lying around, so I thought I’d make use of the zest and bake some lemon blueberry muffins. So I searched online and found this recipe from Food.com.

What I did: Tuesday, July 18

What I did: Tuesday, July 18

I woke up today with the desire to skip the gym and hop into the pool, book in hand. I’m in between books right now btw because I finished Double Cup of Love and can’t decide if I want to read Kitchen Confidential or Girl in the Woods. I meant to bring Girl in the Woods with me to the pool, but ended up accidentally leaving it behind and reading Kitchen Confidential instead (bless the bf for bringing a couple of books down to the pool). Within an hour it became unbearably hot, and we headed back inside.

Later, I did adult things like change out the dead bulb in my car’s break light compartment and got a car inspection. I congratulated myself for doing such things by going to the nearby plant nursery to pick up some plants and ended up with two succulents. Let’s hope I keep these alive this time. Names still TBD.
